A Kickstarter That Takes Rifts, Rubs Off the Serial Numbers, Uses Open D6 and Has Kevin's Blessing - Breachworld

I saw this at the RPG Corner blog. Breachworld is a Kickstarter by Jason Richards that sounds a lot like Rifts without the clunk of the SDC / MDC Palladium system. Actually, it uses Mini Six, which is a striped down version of Open 6, and happens to be OGL.

Heck, it even has an endorsement by Kevin Siembieda:

I'm in at $30 for the Hardcover version of the book.

I was interested in reworking Rifts to strip the system away from the setting, and it appears that Breachworld might have done so without the fear of a lawsuit from Palladium Books ;)

From the project's blurb:
Welcome to the Breachworld RPG, a post-apocalyptic anything-goes sandbox world in desperate need of exploration or exploitation by you, the intrepid tabletop gamer. By backing this Kickstarter, you will help bring this world to life. In appreciation for your help, you'll have the opportunity to join in the adventure, and at a bargain.

  1. Erik, you have made my day. I saw your url in my project dashboard with SO MUCH support coming from this site, I had to come check it out. Love the blog!

As I told the crew over at The RPG Corner, I don't really see this as a Rifts retro-clone. The truth is that getting a bunch of different aliens and monsters to Earth can only be done a couple of ways, and portals is the one that works best without space travel. I really think that any canonical similarities end with the presence of portals, and even those are WAY different. Beyond that, it just follows natural extensions of post-apocalyptic, kitchen sink types of themes.

Having written for Palladium, and Rifts specifically for so many years, obviously Rifts is a big influence. Not just on me, but on the gaming world as a whole. I'm wary of direct comparisons to Rifts, though, not just because I don't want to step on toes, but also because I don't want anyone to feel misled.

All that said, I'm blown away by the support. Really, I am. I think it's well worth your investment and I think you'll love the game. Help me keep the buzz going and we'll have a truly superior product, and hopefully some fun stretches to offer.

    Game on.

    Jason

  2. Back when I was actively playing RIFTS, a fellow gamer and I actually discussed how the D6 system and the Scale rules could do a really good job of handling something RIFTS-like. I'm glad to see someone has gone ahead and done it!

  3. Just wanted to drop back by and let y'all know that a free preview is now available. It's 77 pages and fully playable. You've been my biggest source of blog support, so if we get this thing funded I'll have to figure out something to do for y'all. You could be my NPCs for the GM resource package, or something!
