Can I "Axe You" a Question? ;)

I picked the above up earlier today at the Sugarmann's Indoor Flea Market in Eynon / Dickson City PA. It's a nice (and sharp) replica. I had to ask the vendor that sold it to be to find a bag or two to cover the axe head, as I didn't think I would be projecting the right image otherwise ;)

I also own an antique British Cavalry sword circa late 1840's from India, a large blunt dagger that could inflict a concussion, a replica of "Sting" and some large ass (and cheap) two handed sword.

So, do you own replica or antique weapons? If so, do you display them?

  1. Gah! You suck! :)

I want a Civil War era NCO sword, hard to find that are not insanely expensive. I would also like a Viking sword or ax and a Revolutionary War Long Rifle. All acquisition efforts are currently in a holding pattern, waiting with the wife for approval.

  2. No replicas, only functional weapons. But we have several sword-fighting schools in our city (one of which is truly awesome).

  3. Damn it! You should have told me you meant Scranton area when you said the Poconos! We could have hooked up, had a coffee at BAM or northern Lights or other ... next time, Tenkar, next time.

    1. my family has had a place in Hawley since i was like 2. I've been a "summer resident" ever since.

I should be up a weekend a month or so throughout the winter, thenmore in the spring to help my folks plant the garden.

I'll try to give advance notice next time.

My wife just told me we drove by BAM when we went to Best Buy after Sugarmann's

    2. Again, you drove within 100 yards of my house if you took I-80 out there. :-)

  4. I have some replica swords and a piece of display armor...around here though nearly all weapons use gunpowder and none are for show...I am kind of an outlier with my swords : )

  5. I have a number of swords and knives, including modern functional weapons, reproductions, and wooden training swords. No genuine antique weapons, as genuine Anglo-Saxon or Viking era weaponry is, well, expensive. Some get displayed, some get worn for ritual purposes, and others get used for practice. It's pretty much a mixed bag.

  7. ooh, that's purty. I've been looking at getting a decent bearded axe. Currently I own a replica dagger that has 1/8th inch blunted edges, but could punch through chainmail on a stab. And a non-replica ghurka knife, bowie knife and a few other smaller ones. No swords yet, unless you count my garden machete I picked up a Home Depot.

  8. Yes, several swords (replicas, as I'm too cheap to splurg on antiques). Until recently I displayed three of them. They've been replaced with family photos and Christmas decorations. Sadly, I'll probably lose the battle to place them back on display when decorations come down.

    1. There's a third option for swords and most melee weapons besides replica / antique - there are still a number of blacksmiths, weaponsmiths and armoursmiths making functional weapons and armour out there. So not as pretty (in most cases) as a replica and not as expensive as an antique, but you end up with a fully functional weapon to train with.

And the moment you start training with them, you can tell who got screwed and bought a replica instead.

  9. I actually had to downsize the collection when I realized I don't have enough wall space in the rec room ... so my brother got about 1/2 of my swords. Still I have six swords, a flail, three axes and a katar (the kukri is stowed in the garage with the wood axe, machete, etc.). I would consider maybe two of the axes truly functional, as is the katar, but the swords are all wall hangers. I have bashed around with the swords some would not trust them in a real fight.
    Great conversation pieces too.
One of my axes started out very similar to the one you have pictured, but I remounted it on a real axe handle ... http://mikemonaco.wordpress.com/2010/02/27/now-with-30-more-swords/ (the giant kukri and double flail are among those I downsized).

  11. I've been in the SCA for a long time, so I've acquired quite a few weapons. I still have some wall-hanger style blades that wouldn't hold up to actual use, but I also have several functional reproductions. My wife is into archery and has a period-design crossbow and long bow.

I used to have several hanging on display, but when we had kids we put them away. The kids are old enough now but we've never put the weapons back on display. Just don't fit with the decor anymore.

  12. I have several, not counting wasters and exercise equipment. We display 2 axes - one each for my wife and I. Mine's a functional Viking bearded axe, hers.. less so. But still very dangerous. There's also quite a few short blades, but those don't usually see daylight unless we're going to a meet with friends. My hunting sword is decidedly unlovely, so I don't usually show it off - it's a very utilitarian piece.

In the future, I'm looking for a pre-Civil War Petty Officer's cutlass, partly as a reference to my old rank and partly out of respect for an ancestor who was kidnapped and made to serve under Blackbeard (he was a doctor..), eventually rescued by the Navy. I'm also looking for some specific blackpowder firearms, which I will totally be putting on the walls.
