I figure if you read this blog on a regular basis, you at least have some interest in OSR games (although the definition of OSR varies from gamer to gamer, it's one of those things that we all "know it when we see it";)
I'm looking to see what folks are playing (or want to play)when they aren't playing their favorite OSR ruleset.
Foe me that game is Soloman Kane. Sure, it uses the Savage Worlds system, which I've actually only played once and was fairly clueless, but I love this book with a major gamer's crush, and would play it in a heart beat. I'd run it too, but then I'd actually have to learn the Savage Worlds system well enough to do so ;)
So, what is your favorite "Non OSR" RPG?
I would have to say Cyberpunk 2020. It used to be Kult but I burned myself out on that game several years back.
ReplyDeleteIs Call of Cuthulhu non OSR? ;)
ReplyDeleteAssuming OSR = D&D emulators then I'd have to say it's been BRP/Magic World/Runequest/CoC for me. Also, Pathfinder and Traveller.
ReplyDeleteOh, also DDN
DeleteDon't Rest Your Head and Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple, both from Evil Hat. My Life With Master by Half Meme Press. And after the early digital rewards from their Kickstarter started rolling in, really looking forward to some Kobolds Ate My Baby! By 9th Level.
ReplyDeleteArs Magica, 3rd or 4th edition. Great magic system!
ReplyDeleteRunequest. I'd count Chaosiums 1st and 2nd eds as old school, but I really like Legend and RQ6 as well.
ReplyDeleteBased on amount of play time it has to be Call of Cthulhu (and sibling games as Trail and various related homebrews).
ReplyDeleteI started with GURPS at 1st edition, playtested dozens of supplements, and wrote or co-wrote parts of the official magic system, and genericized the mass combat rules. I've run games at home and at cons. I'm in the Men in Black, Steve Jackson's store and con support volunteers. GURPS is my go-to game.
ReplyDeleteBeyond that, I've always had a good time with Feng Shui, Over the Edge, and Unisystem (Buffy:TVS and C.J. Carella's Witchcraft).
Pathfinder. Sure, it's heavy-handed to the point of brutality, but oh well. For me at least, it has a use.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, it would be a toss up between inSpectres, 3:16 and the original Marvel Super Heroes (that's not old school is it?).
ReplyDeleteGURPS
ReplyDeleteBattletech Mechwarrior.
ReplyDeleteThe Warhammer 40k line of RPGs by Fantasy Flight.
ReplyDeleteERIC!
Anything by Eden Studios, in particular WitchCraft or Ghosts of Albion.
ReplyDeleteThough I am a bit biased.
Probably GURPS.
ReplyDeleteI actually have a short list of non-OSR/old school games that I still like: Reign, Unknown Armies, CORPS, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk 2020, Toon, Lace & Steel, the aforementioned GURPS, a few others that aren't coming to mind right at the moment. RuneQuest 1, 2, and 3 (that last being the AH one), if those aren't counted as "old school" - though I think that they should be.
Well, it occurs to me that Traveller is not an "OSR" game (though it is old school), so it would have to be my favorite, even more than GURPS or RQ.
DeleteGURPS.
ReplyDeleteUnderground
ReplyDeleteI really really love the Legends of the Five Rings RPG. I thing the forth edition book is just beautiful, and the game is equally beautiful to play. I was never a fan of kung fu movies, AD&D Oriental Adventures or even the monk class but I love the setting of Rokugan and the L5R game mechanics.
ReplyDeleteAs a GM: Savage Worlds is my go to these days for pretty much anything. Years ago Werewolf: the Apocalypse consumed a lot of my money if not my time; that game has influenced my setting design ever since. And, the two I most want to run these days would be Fate and Technoir.
ReplyDeleteAs a player: Mutants and Masterminds or Shadowrun.
Traveller.
ReplyDeleteChampions, which in its 1e form clicked in at 64 pages and worked perfectly well, so I'm not sure why there was a need for the 6e rulebook to contain 700 pages.
ReplyDeleteDC Heroes RPG.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe Risus.
I played Shadowrun a lot, but it's not my favourite.
Call of Cthulhu.
ReplyDeleteKing Arthur Pendragon. If you add "The Great Pendragon Campaign", you'll have a rocking campaign with little effort. Worth reading and playing.
ReplyDeleteBRP and Mongoose Traveller.
ReplyDeleteA vote for Savage Worlds...I really like the Pinebox Texas (Supernatural) stuff 12 to Midnight put out way back when
ReplyDeleteWEG Star Wars and All Flesh Must Be Eaten.
ReplyDeleteBack in my gaming heyday the ONLY game that could tear my group away from AD&D was Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, 1st Edition, thank you. I still adore the game, warts and all.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to go with All Flesh Must Be Eaten, with honorable mentions to Changeling the Lost and Werewolf the Forsaken (I know it's heresy but I prefer New WoD, to Classic WoD.)
ReplyDeleteI would say Pathfinder..
ReplyDeleteBig Eyes, Small Mouth. Followed closely by Call of Cthulhu and Paranoia.
ReplyDeleteWhite Wolf's Werewolf: the Forsaken and Palladium's Rifts.
ReplyDeleteI like the blog, but OSR isn't my favorite. I am on a pretty big Savage Worlds kick, there is just a lot I like about the system. Also the new game Dungeon World has a lot going for it.
ReplyDeleteI like different systems for different reasons. I liked the Wotc Star Wars Saga because I could run a pretty decent Star Wars game, but wouldn't want something that mini's related all the time.
Also I really dig Mongoose's RQII/Legend but still haven't run it.
Oh and Erik how the heck do you keep finding out when I post something about the blog on the Happy Jacks forums?
