Monster Stock Art & Minis Kickstarter is in It's Final Stretch

As I type this, there are 5 days left in the Monster Stock Art & Minis Kickstarter Campaign.  It's already hit it's second stretch goal, and the third is in sight.

I'm in on the high end, as I do have plans to write and publish gaming stuff at some point, even if it is a bit further down the line than even "remotely soon".  I just like to plan things out well in advance when I can.

I also bit at the 400 laminated miniatures for 25 bucks.  I don't think I could hope to meet that price for the quality art being used.  Besides, I have neither the time, money or space to buy and paint 400 metal miniatures.  For that, I'd have to outsource, like the Chivalry & Sorcery blog discusses here ;)  (more on this later).

Here's some of the latest pieces of art from the Kickstarter Project:

  1. What's the deal with rights? Is it a matter of support the project and then have the rights to use the images in your publishing? I looked it over briefly, and wasn't clear.

  2. I've looked at it again - I think I grasp it better this time.

  3. certain pledge amounts have rights attached... let me see if i can break them down:

$2 -One web-size (600 pixels on the larger side) monster image of your choice usable personally and commercially subject to the license noted in the project's description. (so u get to pick one)

$5 -One print quality (1/4 page or larger, depending on the image size) monster image of your choice usable personally and commercially subject to the license noted in the project's description.

$35 -25 Web-size (600 pixels on the larger side) monster images of your choice usable personally and commercially subject to the license noted in the project's description. Pick your favorites!

$50 -50 Web-size (600 pixels on the larger side) monster images of your choice usable personally and commercially subject to the license noted in the project's description.

on to the end (but not including the $125 "make a monster look like me" choice)

$230 -*ALL* (as many as we're able to do) the monster art as Print quality (1/4 page or larger @300dpi) images usable personally and commercially subject to the license noted in the project's description. (this is where i am at + $38 for laminated miniature sheets, box and extra stands)

if your pledge includes the use of licensed art (some pledge levels are for personal use only):

Here is the license in plain English:

The art may not be sold as part of a stock art or clip art product. Further, the pieces from this collection may not make up over 25% of any product where it is used. (So if you want to do your own bestiary using a 1/4 page image of each monster, you're at the limit, but that's OK.)

The licensee may modify the image as he sees fit as long as it does not affect the artist's moral rights. (Purposely make the art look bad.)

The image can appear in advertisements for products which use the image.

The artist’s name must appear in the product’s credits.

    (fairly simple license)
