Memories Don't Always Revisit Well

I loaded up Baldur's Gate 1 last night and gave it a try. This game rocked back in the day, but I found the graphics almost painful. More accurately, I strained to read the game text.

In defense of the game, it certainly wasn't designed for a 27" computer screen. It will probably be readable on my lapptop.

I'm gonna jump ahead to Baldur's Gate II next, and see if the situation resolves itself. Or maybe all the way to ToEE - the community patch apparently makes the game a near 10

  1. You may already be aware of it, but if you aren't, you might want to check out http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt - Baldur's Gate Trilogy (WeiDU) which takes your already installed versions of BG & BGII and combines them into one big game under the BGII engine.

  4. I loved Baldur's Gate back in the day, as well as the Icewind Dale expansion and Shadows of Amn. You've made me want to dig it up and give it a whirl once again.

  5. To quote from Armies of Darkness...

    "You found me beautiful once."
"Yeah, but you got real ugly."

  6. Yes, as mentioned there are a number of patches out there to modernise the Baldur's Gate games. I haven't used them, but there's also a set for Planescape: Torment that make it fit very nicely on a modern display, so I can imagine they work well.

ToEE was from a different company and used a different engine, so I don't know about patches for that. I do know it was horribly bugged at release, so I'd imagine someone tried to fix it at some point.

  7. The necessary patches for ToEE are available at The Circle Of Eight Forum, http://www.co8.org/forum/ - they are a must-get, as they repair all kinds of problems with the original program.

I've run Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate I on my laptop, and they work fine with readable script. So this is probably one case where smaller is better. ;)
