The Trollish Taproom - The Tangled Web of Tunnels & Trolls 7.5e

I love my Tunnels & Trolls 7.5e Boxed set.  The thing is so jam packed, the lid doesn't even close properly.  The same thing I love about it is probably the main issue with it.

The extras compared to the 7e Tin Set are the addition of the Monstrum Codex, Codex Incantum, Strange Destinies and Hot Pursuit.  These add an excellent value to the set.  They are also Outlaw Press products.

The Delver's Pack for 7.5e is all Outlaw Press stuff: Monstrum Codex II, Codex Incantum II, Trollgod's Exciting Random Rooms of Ruination and Hunting Party are also Outlaw Press products, repackaged by Fiery Dragon for the Delver's Pack.

I guess I never realized how linked T&T 7.5e is to OP, at least I didn't until I sat down and did a survey of what I own.  I never realized how much of 7.5e was just some repackaging by Fiery Dragon.

No big statement, just an observation.

My biggest problems with 7.5e (from a player / GM perspective) is the leveling / stat increase system.  To me, it feels broken compared to 5/5.5e.  Oh, and the included solo is totally the wrong choice to include in the initial boxed set.  You want a solo a newbie can play, not die in the first encounter.

  1. I've been thinking about re-acquiring the T&T rulebook. I used to own 5e in the olden days but (foolishly) got rid of it at one point. I am strongly leaning toward picking up 5e again, rather than the newer edition -- originally, this was for nostalgia purposes, but your post seems to confirm the general wisdom of my choice.

  2. 5.5 is the latest from Flying Buffalo. Basically 5e with some optional rules added in the back of the book. Very good choice.

    7.5e is an excellent choice as well, with the exception of my small caveats. 7.5e is official and licensed from FBI.

  4. I have been hearing many 5th ed old timers complaining that the levelling system in 7th ed. don't work for them.

    Personally I find the stat based system to make a lot more sense than anything else. But, some other parts of 5th ed. did fit together in a way it doesn't in 7th ed.

    The fact that LK increases so much quicker in 5th than any other stat is indicative of how in older editions, not quite that clearly stated, the expected stat to base SR on was LK.

    I'm not sure I like the idea that different stats are that different in importance. I'd really like some in depth commentary on that system from someone with experience of both 5th ed and 7th ed.

    Like I said, I'd really like some in depth commentary on that system. I think it's needed for me getting why someone ever could have a beef with the system.

  7. I think it is screwy for the casters. Roll well, or take a class with a x2 stat, and you have the ability to cast 3 or 4th level spells from the start.

    Roll average stats, or play a human, and you are just a regular 1st level caster.

    It's not like level is based upon a stat relevant to your class...

    I started WAY back with 5e - so it is a pretty large change for me, even if i didnt play T&T much until recently

    Hmm.

    I'd say that since you are a new character, you only know 1st level spells, so even if you could cast 3rd levels spells you don't know any. Also, the level is in fact based on a stat relevant to your class, or at least it's based on different stats for different classes. Maybe the list is a bit generous, though.

    But, I think I kind of see what you mean. While I don't see it as such a big screwup I am wondering about the fact that now all stats can increase at the same pace, but before LK was way easier than anything else.

    That sounds screwy to me... :)

  9. Yeah, when 4 out of 8 of the attributes are your primes, it's easy to increase one.

    I guess I just don't like the idea of level being linked to an attribute. It's a major change from 5/5.5e that I dont think was broken, therefore it didn't need this huge fix.

    Still, in the end, 5.5 and 7.5 still play 95% of the way the same, so its not a deal breaker ;)
