Campaigns that last for years do so becasue the players and DM are having fun not becasue the players have committed to a long hard slog and the rules don't get in the way.
pig farmer to daring bravo, daring bravo to renowned swordsman, renowned swordsman to mercenary captain, mercenary commander to defender of the realm, defender of the realm to slayer of the dark lord, slayer of the darklord to high king of the rectification... are not going to happen in 50 hours. It's only going to happen if everyone is having fun, the DM isn't railroading the players from day one, and the rules give room for the players to grow with the campaign not outgrow the campaign.JDJarvishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07691101939920824546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724254580047847936.post-3681588625153621572012-04-11T11:22:07.246-04:002012-04-11T11:22:07.246-04:00Sorry to disagree, but the difference between 1e a...Sorry to disagree, but the difference between 1e and 4e D&D characters is mostly a matter of mechanics. They are much easier to reconcile than - for instance - a 1e D&D character, a Traveller character and a Vampire: The Masquerade character.

Character and play complexity should be agreed upon between both players and GM. If either is stuck playing a game they don't want to play, then the game will suffer or just stutter to an end.

And I love the idea of a 50 hour campaign. Not every campaign needs to be a Bataan Death March that lasts for 10 years and takes a character from pig herder to demi-god. Sometimes a campaign should last from pig herder to local hero who gets the girl and lives happily ever after.StevenWarblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12697680166430879676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724254580047847936.post-57372404905362952392012-04-11T10:39:13.782-04:002012-04-11T10:39:13.782-04:00I still don't see how a 4e style character wil...I still don't see how a 4e style character will play along the lines of a 1e style character. *Sigh*

Mearls stats,"We're not trying to reinvent D&D so much as Rediscover it."

Does that mean 4e was not D&D...are they admiting something alot of us have been saying for years?

ERIC!Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18251132223571608976noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724254580047847936.post-87011518175810016282012-04-11T08:10:54.482-04:002012-04-11T08:10:54.482-04:00"complete campaigns in 50 hours of play"..."complete campaigns in 50 hours of play" ?

what?

So in 50 hours of play a we are going to see characters got from 1st level to 15th? 20th, 30th level?

How are players ever goign to learn how to play their characters if abilities change over such a time span.
For my group 50 hours would be 12-15 sessions. Having 1e characters and 4e characters at the same table makes no sense. They are completely different game systems. This sounds like a complete nightmare for a DM.JasonZavodahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13109502376214104276noreply@blogger.com
