Halloween Sale and Freebies at DTRPG

Above are the current Halloween Freebies at DTRPG. They will change daily, so check back often.

Heck, even if you don't use a certain freebie directly, it may offer some inspiration you might otherwise not have encountered.

Did I mention there is ALSO a Halloween Sale at DTRPG until the end of the month, with discounts of up to 20%? Well, now you know ;)

Humble Bundle - The Bleeding Heart of Heavy Metal Comic Bundle: Volume 1

Heavy Metal. Not the music, but the graphic magazine. It was iconic in my formative gaming years, and I'd pick up the occasional issue and often find some inspiration for my latest RPG campaign. When I fell out of reading comics on any regular sort of basis, I stopped picking up the occasional Heavy Metal.

Humble Bundle has a collection of Heavy Metal Issues, 45 for 25 bucks (less than 60 cents an issue).

I'm glad I'm collecting my comic books digitally these days, as room and storage is no longer an issue ;) If you are truly unsure, you can snag three issues for a buck. Damn!

For a single buck!

Continual Light "Proof Copy" in Hand - The Time is Getting Near!

My "Proof Copy" of Continual Light arrived today, and damn it looks good. I'll pour over it for the next few days to make sure everything is up to snuff, but no longer will I hear "the layout is serviceable" ;)

Jeff Jones did an amazing job with the layout. 33 pages of rules. Nice and clean.

I'll update when we have firmed up the release (likely through Kickstarter)

Damn, but it's hard to line up these actual pics properly ;)

What Is The Tavern Video Network?

I don't see this hobby of ours, gaming, old school gaming in particular, as a "Zero Sum" proposition. Just because you bought Hyperborea, doesn't mean you won'y grab a copy of the new Continual Light when it releases. Just because you watched a video on the Tenkar's Tavern Youtube Channel doesn't mean you won't watch JoetheLawyer's latest video. Actually, if you enjoyed one, you'll probably enjoy the other.

That is where the idea for The Tavern Video Network came from. Initially, it was thought of as a way to highlight the video channels of my various co-host on the regular livestreams - Glen, Joe and Matt all have channels of their own, and Rob and Bad Mike are considering their own channels. What a great way to highlight everyone and support the creation of more gaming related videos, we all thought :)

I had considered the possibility of adding other creators to the network when Joe Bloch PMed me this morning and asked how he could get involved. Which simply tells me this idea was well overdue.

The Tavern Video Network will be a one stop location highlighting what each creator thinks was their best, or most interesting, video from the prior week and a brief write up of what their channel is about. It's a Substack page/newsletter, which means you can go to the page directly on your own, or be reminded by a weekly newsletter. We will never charge for this service, and the game plan is a weekly mailing over the weekend (likely Sundays), with rare middle-of-the-week newsletter if there is REALLY BIG news.

Editorial and content control will remain in the hands of the individual creators. This is simply a cooperative of sorts to get everyone seen and heard.

Anyhow, as of this coming weekend we'll be up to five channels, as Joe Bloch's channel will be added to the mix.

Bundle of Holding - GURPS 4e Horror Starter

I am far from a GURPS expert. It's likely been 30 years or more since I've run a GURPS campaign of any length. That being said, GURPS supplements are damn universal and systemless. At the very least, they are inspirational for use with other systems.

There are two GURPS themed Bundle of Holding available right now.

GURPS 4e Essentials includes the following for 19.95 in PDF:

  • GURPS 4E Basic Set
  • GURPS Template Toolkit 1
  • Adaptations
  • How to Be a GURPS GM
  • GURPS 4E GM's Screen

GURPS 4e Horror includes the following for 14.95 in PDF:

  • GURPS Horror 4E
  • Creatures of the Night 1-5
  • Infinite Worlds: Worlds of Horror

Not a bad deal for Halloween ;)

How Would You Build a Game Room?

How Would You Build a Game Room?
Confession Nobody Cares About: I've never had a dedicated gaming space, much less a bonafide game room.

In the past I either gamed outside of the home (conventions, friend's houses, or...for a stint...at the local State University) or I had a setup that was flexible enough to pull out when needed and easy enough to set aside when not. The heart of my setup was a HUGE tabletop that was a bit bigger than 4' x 8'. Originally that table was in two pieces, and fit tightly on top of another table I had. There was a big grid marked on top, underneath quite a few layers of brush on Varathane. Never did use that grid, so adding one was a waste of time.

Now that I'm half a country away in my it's-only-me space, I get to have a game "room". It's an odd space as the room is only two walls, just off of and open to both the kitchen and living room. It has a decent amount of light and the only real downsides, if you want to call it that, would be the crappy ceiling light and a fireplace. I'm already in the process of replacing the light with a ceiling fan. The fireplace technically isn't a bad thing, but I'd rather have the usable wall space....so essentially I only have the one wall.

Kallax Unit

Originally I had planned on taking the one good wall and putting in floor-to-ceiling shelving units. I only have just under 12" between that wall  and the beginning of the fireplace and I did find some nice Ikea units that would fit....assuming that they were ever restocked. Over the course of 6 months and three Ikeas I couldn't get anything, so I'm flexing. I picked up a couple of 4x3 Kallax units that will serve as my shelving. I'm going to put some  picture hanging shelves above the units and a small GM desk in between them, eventually. I'm hoping there will be room to keep my arcade cabinet in that space.......it can be more than one type of gaming room.

I think I should have enough shelving space for enough of my minis and terrain. I have an idea that'll give me some more space......a big-assed digital gaming table. I have a rather large big-screen TV that was donated (not by me) to the cause and I'll have to build in into something decent that will seat enough 6 players and the GM comfortably. I already have some secondary computer and screens setup for the players to use, but laptops are still an option.

Most of my gaming...decor? Is spread throughout the house, mostly because I can, but with the picture shelves I can rotate through different art pieces and I'm hoping there will be enough room to display a big game world map. I have a couple of world maps already printed, and at least one framed, but that's assuming I get to actually use any of them....

I've already got my speakers picked up and I'm seriously considering putting in a projector mount, but that's about it.....

Now if you were able to plan out your own game room, assuming you haven't done it before....actually especially if you've done it before ('cause you'd know what you'd change)...what is a must-include?
