I've looked at Advanced Fighting Fantasy before before but never pulled the trigger. Now, I'm not saying I'd use the system, but I wonder how convertible the adventures would be to Swords & Wizardry.
In any case, $7.95 is certainly a fair buy in. Its about 20 bucks for the Bonus Collection. Very tempting.
I think it would be reasonably easy to convert the adventures. Magic might be slighly different (as far as spell levels) but I'm sure you can figure it out on the fly. For the most part the encounters are setup similar, and somewhat balanced (as far as old school type games can balance things).
For us European 80s kids who grew up with the Fighting Fantasy books, AFF is clearly THE best introductory game (this, or Das Schwarze Auge ;)) The adventures are not as easily convertible than D&D-based ones, but Blacksand is hands down the best city supplement of that era.
Agreed, Blacksand is my absolutely favorite! I think the adventures could be converted, at least the gist of the adventures, with a bit of work on the DMs part.
It is worth noting that Titan and Blacksand (setting books) are almost completely system free, and you get the hi res maps too! Crown of Kings and Warlock... would be pretty easy to convert. The monster manuals would need a bit more work, but if you treat SKILL as an analog of hit dice, you have a good start. The dungeon generator is systemless too.
Having said all of that, if you get the bundle, give the rules a try. You might be pleasantly surprised!
Well I'm not crazy about the system (its good enough I guess), but Titan is system agnostic and AWESOME IMO. It is said to have been a huge influence on Dark Souls, for example. Maybe the best of to explain it is that is only focuses on the cool parts of the setting. Its just a fun read, even if you never use it. I love the art too (Russ Nicholson et alt).
System is great, IMO. It is flexible and fast. See conversion info here (found it on their forums): http://users.tpg.com.au/shargl/aff/download/AFFModuleConversion_0.5.pdf
