How Many "Free RPG Day 2014" Releases Released for Free in PDF?

I've been trying to put together a list of the 2014 Free RPG Day releases in PDF and it's really short. I think I must have subconsciously already known this, as it's taken me over 4 months to even look.

The Doom Cave of the Crystal-Headed Children is available in PDF as PWYW

A Druid's Lament for C&C is $4.99 in PDF - go figure

Make Your Own Luck for 13th Age apparently doesn't have a PDF version

Same for the Shadowrun / Battletech Quickstart

As for the DCC RPG/Xcrawl Free RPG Day 2014 release? $4.99 (same as every year)

I didn't see this year's Cosmic Patrol Quickstart on RPGNow

There are a crapload of Valiant Universe Quickstarts over at RPGNow - no idea if any are the Free RPG Day release, but they are all free.

Previous years seem to have had more PDF releases if I recall correctly.

  2. i think previous years had more product, period. The Cosmic Patrol and the Battletech releases were year-old repeats this year.

  3. I have no problem with Free RPG Day materials having a price in pdf. After all, a major point of Free RPG Day is to promote a visit to your FLGS, not to download the offerings from your basement half a year later.

Although that doesn't immediately help those without a participating FLGS, anything that increases the viability of gaming stores in the Internet Age increases the chance of having a FLGS in the future.

    1. I agree. It takes a publisher a fairly significant printing expense to support Free RPG Day, so I have no problem with them wanting to make some of that cost back.

I would prefer if the cost were closer to $2 rather than $5, but it is what it is.

On the whole though, even though there was less material this year, the quality of most of the content appears pretty high. The 13th Age adventure seems to have been well recieved (I missed out on a copy of that one) and Druid's Lament is a nice little side-trek adventure.

  4. Only one of two FLGSs was hosting FRPG Day this year, and at a significantly lower level, so I wasn't able to pick up A Druid's Lament as I'd hoped. I'll be picking it up in PDF, though I'd prefer print, it's just not feasible with shipping it to Canada (well, feasible, just ridiculous).

However, two publishers always provide PDFs of their FreeRPG Day offerings - Pathfinder (
    http://paizo.com/pathfinder/modules/freeRPGDay) and this year's newbie, Choose-O-Matic Books (i.e Time Travel Dinosaur, https://gumroad.com/mattyoungmark).
