Magic the Gathering to be a Movie Franchise!

Thanks to +Erik Jensen and +James Aulds for bringing this to my attention.

From the Hollywood Reporter website:
20th Century Fox has closed a deal to acquire the hugely popular fantasy card game from Hasbro and will develop the property with an eye to launch a massive franchise on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.
This will be either really sweet or suck ass. We do know the Dungeons & Dragons movie franchise sucks ass.

My favorite quote from the article:
Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis and Wizards of the Coast president Greg Leeds will act in produce capacities. (emphasis mine)
So, are we going to push the movie in the "produce aisle" of the local supermarket?

Yeah, I make typos all of the time, but I'm a lowly blogger ;)

  1. They appear to have fixed it...

"Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis and Wizards of the Coast president Greg Leeds will act in production capacities."

The author, Borys Kit, seems to at least have a passing knowledge of the source material. Perhaps a good sign. But I won't hold my breath, especially after what Peter Jackson did to Dwarves..

  2. I never cared for Magic the Gathering. I read one book, I think. So they can't "hurt my feelings" with this one.

  3. The best part is that the first movie will be released on minute long dvds, randomly packaged, of course.

    Collect all 135 !!

  4. I wonder what the story could be?

I'll be honest here, I could never get into Magic so I'm at a loss for what storyline it could have.

  5. An article over here: http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/27619.html
describes it as the "film rights." I can't imagine Fox taking over the game.

  6. My bet is it won't suck ass, but many will complain the producers should have built a better deck, that 42 minutes of land was way too much time, that 8 more minutes of artifacts would have made for a much better ending, bla bla bla
