State of The Tavern - November 27th, 2016

First things first. You folks are amazing. Not only has The Tavern's Facebook Group hit over 1,075 members (in less than a year) but November is the strongest month of RPGNow affiliate sales - ever - and there are still 4 days to go. I'll give a Tavern financial update in 2 weeks or so - suffice to say things are looking up.

Swords & Wizardry Light has surpassed 1,100 downloads. If you include the physical copies that were distributed at GameHole Con and U-Con, its over 1,300 copies in circulation. By the end of the year there should be 5k copies looking for homes in the Frog God Warehouse. Word.doc format coming shortly.

There are future plans for Swords & Wizardry Light, including one-sheets and a zine. Already, third party releases are releasing to the community. Thank you to everyone that has given the rules a chance.

After three attempts in two weeks I've given up. What am I talking about? Trying to find parking near a NYC Area Post Office. I have packages to mail to those that got lucky in the S&W themed giveaways and have now realized how important that parking permit that allowed me to park at a police facility near a post office was. Yep, there is a downside to retirement. So, I signed up for Stamps Dot Com on Wednesday. Even ordered a postage printer. I assume things will be shipping by mid week.

Oh, this also means there are plans to make some SWL PDF releases limited Print releases - laser printer and print from home. No details yet. The Triumvirate needs to meet and discuss.

Note - there are standards to belong to the community, whether its here on the blogside or The Tavern's Facebook Community. Known con men / confidence men / frauds need not apply at the FB Community unless they come clean. Some have done so (The Wandering Wizard comes to mind) Others will not, and as such, will not be welcomed. Yes, its personal.

Beer - 11% ABV brewed with cherries and honey. Enjoyed with milk chocolate covered cherries. Because you can't have enough cherries... and beer.

Echelon Game Design - James Spahn (Barrel Rider Games, publisher of White Star and of Labyrinth Lord supplements) had an unfortunate interaction with a kamikaze bambi. He and his family are fine, nobody in the car was injured, but they’re looking at a big repair bill.

I was already planning to run a sale this weekend, but it’s changed a bit. From now through Cyber Monday, all Echelon Game Design products — Polyhedral Pantheons, Draconic Bloodlines, and the entire Echelon Reference Series — are on sale at a 20% discount. Half my proceeds will go to James to get the bambi-shaped dents and other damage to his car fixed.

Yesterday Was the One Year Anniversary of the Start of The Tavern's In Depth Look at the Gygax Memorial Fund

That year went by fast. Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of The Tavern's in depth look at the Gygax Memorial Fund. It truth, we still don't know much about a Fund that wants to raise thousands more dollars selling bricks. Heck, we haven't had a fund update since July (when the Forces of Gygax were to await the Call to Arms at the Lake Geneva City Council - hasn't happened)

We have gotten up to date Tax Returns - we haven't seen the audit that was promised and I doubt we will.

If you want to follow the saga (my favorite was Gail not remembering our conversation and accusing me of fabrication until she saw the screenshots - ah well) just click on the tag at the bottom of this post. That's the long story and its a doozy.

Short story? I suspect this project is a bridge to nowhere that will never get built. If there was any intention for this to complete there would be activity engaging gamers and hobbyists, retailers and publishers. There is nothing. There will be nothing.

Now, quick question for those that might know - if the Memorial never happens, what becomes of the monies in the Fund?

Inquiring minds want to know ;)

E-Z DUNGEONS - Print and Fold Terrain - 50% Off

Last night, Turkey Night, my so close to 6 years old niece was hanging out with me in my room. I was on my computer, because I had an idea.

"Uncle?" she said.

"Yes Pinky?" I answered. I've called her Pinky since she was a but a babe in the arms. Only Uncle can call her Pinky.

"You are on the computer too much!"

I laughed.

"Really? You think so, do you? So, tell me what you see on my computer." I was looking at E-Z DUNGEONS: Deluxe Edition. It was that "idea" that I had.

"Is that Dungeons & Dragons?" That's what she calls Dwarvenite from Dwarven Forge.

"Almost. Its very much like it, but you print it from your computer."

She looked at me, back to the computer screen and back at me again, Her eyes twinkled and her mouth was slightly agape.

"So Pinky, what does this mean?"

"It means I can have all of the Dungeons & Dragons I want! Just print more!"

From the mouth of babes.

Last night, Fat Dragon was not running a sale. I almost bought, but I figured I had some time and maybe a set would pop up on a Dead of the Day Special.

Today I saw the E-Z Dungeons line was 50% off. $14.99 for the Deluxe Edition became $7.49 - snagged and done.

Now to print out dungeons in time for Christmas ;)

Ken Whitman - American Success Story - How to Build a Career Off of Other Peoples Money

Kenny boy, I know you read The Tavern like its Variety - I mean, where else do people actually know your name?

Here - let me tally up Ken's successes:

- Non-speaking part in a McGuiver episode
- Three appearances as a mope in The Walking Dead
- Keeping one step ahead of AGs and process servers
- Selling photos of himself

Now - let me tally up Ken's failures - if I miss any, please add them to the comments below - note: we are only referring to Ken's failures in business ventures, and remember, just because Ken made money does not make it a success:

- Deck Dice
- Pencil Dice
- RPG Pencil Dice
- Castles & Crusades: Beyond the River (T.V. Pilot)
- Knights of the Dinner Table: Live Action Series (KODT: LAS) (this should count as multiple fails)
- Spinward Traveller (T.V. Pilot)
- Every other KS project Kenny had his grubby hands on
- Directing
- Editing
- Managing
- Producing - anything of value
- RapidPOD - MIA since 2004 - dust in the wind

Yes Ken, you have that certain look. I'd define it for you but such words are no longer considered politically correct these days. I'll leave it that have a "special" look.

Still using the equipment paid for by your Kickstarter backers to further for your career? You lovable lug you! You get to insult your backers AND your viewers. Lets see, make a livable salary and pay off your debts or have the sense of responsibility of a 5 year old and take up acting?

Yes, punting projects to Summer of 2017 with NO posted plans on how to actually complete such projects. The World According to Ken. That sir, is a fucking bucket of hubris.

Roll a d10 - Some of the Things I'm Thankful of This Year

There's a huge amount of people, events, things and a whole lot more I'm thankful for in 2016. In no particular order:

1 - Retirement - its opened doors I never even noticed I could walk through before

2 - This Community - the support and faith this community has shown in me is awesome. Thank you from the bottom of my heart

3 - Rach - I need to find her something like semi-retirement ;)

4 - Frog God Games - Swords & Wizardry Light - need I say more?

5 - +Zach Glazar , +James Spahn and +Jason Paul McCartan . They understand me better than I understand myself at times

6 - "The Kid" - I've screwed up many things in my 49 years - I'm so glad this turned out right - he makes me proud

7 - This Community - is this on the list twice? Well, that's okay because many things on this list and beyond this list would not have happened without each and every one of you

8 - My niece, "Pinky" - the nearly 6 year old that not only has an eye for building dungeons but so dearly wants to learn to read using Swords & Wizardry Light - so she can play Dungeons & Dragons with Uncle

9 - Life itself - I've stared down death in my 49 years. I'm still here and would like to see another 49 - because that would be getting real value from my pension ;)

10 - So many others who have directly or indirectly helped this year to be an amazing year. Tim, Doug, Peter, Dave, Brian, Tony, Greg, John, Ben, Joe, Mike, Bill, Keith, David, Matt, Barry, Marissa, Craig, Chris, all the weekly Tavern Chatters, The Taverners, Maria, Vince, Alex, Glenn, so many fucking others that if I don't stop I'll never get this posted - you know who you are

10a - Beer. Cause, you know...

Kickstart - Kung Fu Combo - A Hard Hitting, Fast Action Card Game

There is something to be said for a card game that can be played in 15 minutes or less. Its make it great for pick up games or something that can be played during a break in a longer game.

A card game that can be played in 15 minutes or less AND can replicate the feel of martial arts? That's huge. Well, huge in a small package.

I'm talking about Kung Fu Combo.

Did I mention the buy in is as low as 10 bucks (plus 2 bucks for shipping) for a physical copy?

Damn, I wish I had a copy for Turkey Day. This would be a fun way to resolve political discussions ;)

Did I mention that I expect sales to kick off hot and heavy over the next few days? Well, they are. Purple Sorcerer is next in the mix, offering 40% off their entire catalogue in PDF (prices good through Monday). Hmmm... it does seem very DCC RPG heavy recently, doesn't it?

I'm a huge fan of Purple Sorcerer, so its hard for me to point at any one product and say "get that one!", but Carnival of the Damned is probably the easiest to rip to pieces and put back together as your own Frankenstein ;)

Nearly 2 Years Late - Where is the City State Kickstarter?

I've been inundated recently with requests to look at the nearly 2 years late City State of the Invincible Overlord Kickstarter. If you read the current comments at the KS page, backers have started reporting this project to Kickstarter itself.

Exactly how much cash did the City State raise? Over $85k from 965 backers. It's certainly not small change. Heck, I'm in for $145 myself ($60 plus stretch goal maps)

So, what went wrong? Why are we nearly 2 years late to completion and no updates since September 2?

Yes, its "Backers Only" - No links, nothing secret and nothing since
Could it be stretch goals? I'm putting the large bet on minis, which has been the death toll of many a Kickstarter.

Then again, there are the endless maps. All of which are being redone by one man.

As of September the book itself wasn't laid out.

It's impossible to pin the blame on one aspect of this project as it seems all aspects are behind.

That being said, silence is not golden when it comes to Kickstarters. No, silence is often seen as the death knell, when backers start to worry that the monies they put forth in the hopes of receiving a product that excited them seems to be disappearing into a Bag of Devouring with nothing coming in return.

I've seen comments comparing this project to one of Ken Whitman's boondoggles. That's unfair, as that requires premeditated malfeasance. I don't see that here. I see overwhelmed by success, which can be worse than not funding at all.

I hope there is an update on the project soon, one that is accurate and honest in its assessment. Its the only way to stem the tide, if there is a way left at this point.

WWII: Operation WhiteBox Now in Print (S&W Compatible)

If you haven't yet checked out +Pete Spahn 's WWII: Operation WhiteBox because you "only buy books you can hold", well your time has come.

Softcover Print plus PDF is $17.99

Hardcover Print plus PDF is $24.99

If you grabbed the PDF prior, check your email. You should find a discount code or two for the print versions.

The blurb:

WWII: Operation WhiteBox is a roleplaying game of WWII special forces action designed for compatibility with the Swords & Wizardry WhiteBox roleplaying game.

In WWII: Operation WhiteBox, the player characters (PCs) play the role of WWII special forces operatives. They may be formally trained and part of an officially designated special forces unit such as the SAS or U.S. Army Airborne, or they may simply be guerilla fighters dedicated to making life hard for the German Army. They may also be covert agents working for organizations such as the SOE or OSS. Whatever their affiliation, their job is to complete missions behind enemy lines, paving the way for the next Allied advance.

WWII: Operation WhiteBox is a standalone game that uses the Swords & Wizardry WhiteBox rules as its base. In addition to standard gameplay rules, the game contains the following:

CHARGEN: This includes Attributes, Nationality, Rank, Profession, etc.

NEW CLASSES: Eight new classes including the Charmer, Combat Engineer, Grunt, Maquis, Sniper, Tactician, Wheelman, Uberlaufer, each with their own unique abilities.

GEAR AND WEAPONS: A list of typical WWII weapons and gear. Weapons are statistically grouped by function (Large Rifle, Small Handgun, Submachinegun, etc.) with some named examples to add flavor (M1 Garand, Derringer, MP40, etc.).

PLAYING THE GAME: Rules for Saving Throws, Surprise, Reaction Rolls, Movement, etc.

PERSONAL COMBAT: Rules for "theater of the mind" combat including new rules for automatic weapons, using cover and concealment, and explosives.

VEHICLE COMBAT: Rules for "theater of the mind" vehicle combat (basically the same as personal combat) and vehicles grouped and statted out (Small Truck, Medium Tank, Small Aircraft, etc.) with named examples to add flavor (Kubelwagen, M4 Sherman, British Spitfire, etc.).

GAMEPLAY EXAMPLE: A gameplay write up to show some of the new concepts in action.

COMMON NPCs AND ANIMALS: Stats and descriptions for civilians, soldiers, and common European animals.

COVERT SPECIAL FORCES EQUIPMENT: Descriptions of some real world equipment designed and/or used by special forces during WWII.

THE WWII CAMPAIGN: This chapter gives an overview of the different theaters, major events of the different time periods, and lots and lots of tips for running a WWII campaign.

SPECIAL FORCES IN THE EUROPEAN THEATER: An overview of various Allied special forces units such as the SAS, LRDG, OSS, etc., resistance organizations such as the French Maquis and the Norwegian Milorg, an German special forces units such as the Brandenburgers. This chapter also runs down how to design a special forces mission as well as the different types of missions commonly undertaken.

WWII TIMELINE: A chronological timeline of major WWII dates and events.

HISTORIC WWII SPECIAL FORCES ACTIONS: Contains a brief description of real world historical missions undertaken by units like the British Commandos, Jedburghs, etc.

RESISTANCE AT THE PONTEVILLE BRIDGE: A sample mission deep in Normandy.

MASS COMBAT RULES: Quick and dirty rules for resolving Mass Combat as well as how to incorporate PC missions into the results.

MINI-SETTINGS: Nazi Superscience, Nazi Occult, and Nazi Space elements to liven up your game!

CHECK OUT OUR WWII: OPERATION WHITEBOX G+ COMMUNITY PAGE HERE: https://plus.google.com/communities/100846094177083736725

NOTE ON THE PRINT VERSION: The color version is the Premium Color option. These colors are not as vivid as the PDF, with the green headers and boxed text being more of an olive drab than a bright green. If color is unimportant, go with the less expensive B&W version. Thanks!

Kickstarter - UNDERSCARES - The Diaper from the Creators of Outlast 2 (What is says on the Tin)

Sometimes you just don't get proper potty time while preparing the ritual sacrifice. For times like that, you need the right adult diapers. Well, Underscares were made with you in mind.

Or not. Sure, this Kickstarter is half a joke, but only half, as the diapers are real. I wouldn't want to wear them, let alone use the, but they are real.

Yeah, I've got nothing else. There are just some things that speak well enough for themselves.

Smell Adventure? Get Some Adventure Scents (For Real - Really)

Ever wonder what a sewer smells like? A dungeon perhaps? A dragons lair? Horse stables? I always guessed they all smelled like piss, shit and rotting flesh and vegetation of various degrees, but here's your chance to smell such for real!

Yep, as if it wasn't bad enough to occasional game with gamers with bad hygiene habits, no you can smell the true smell of roleplaying.

Maybe its just me, but smell-orama was never a selling point for me.

But hey, Adventure Scents has for those of you that want to experience adventuring "for realz!" the opportunity to enjoy such smells.

While you are at it, maybe a FeBreze for Cons.

Patreon - Nomad Gaming is creating System-Neutral Standalone Fantasy Adventures (RPG)

As I sit here during the halftime of the Giants - Bears game, it occurred to me that I haven't highlighted Nomad Gaming's Patreon project.

Nomad gaming does short, system neutral adventures that simply scream to be used with Swords & Wizardry Light, as they are nice and compact and you'll be ready to run one after about 15-20 minutes of reading (and possibly rereading)

+Thom Wilson (the man behind the project) is also one of the first creators in the community to really get exciting about what SWL brings t the gaming community - a nice, compact old school ruleset perfect for con plan or campaign play. It just happens that Thom writes really nice bite sized adventures, so one goes very will with the other.

You can drop Thom's adventures / encounters into your campaign as needed, between adventures or smack in the middle of one.

You can back for as little as a buck a month, but at a buck-fity you get 1 or 2 adventures / encounters every month. I'm in at a buck-fity :)

Deal of the Day - E-Z DUNGEONS: Caverns of Chaos (Print and Play Terrain)

Fat Dragon Games has it's Caverns of Chaos as the new Deal of the Day at RPGNow. E-Z Dungeons is probably the most affordable terrain that is useful and pleasing to the eye. Print and Play makes this an infinite series of caverns.

From the blurb:

First Review of Swords & Wizardry Light - OmnusCritic does a Video Review

Wow. There is little more heart stopping than listening to someone review your work. Looks like we made the cut...

Its about 14 minutes long. I can breath again. Heh ;)

Two Weeks - Over 1,000 Downloads - Swords & Wizardry Light

I am shocked, stoked, excited and just plain tickled pink. Earlier today we passed 1,000 downloads of Swords & Wizardry Light. Just over 2 weeks for that milestone.

We, as in +Zach Glazar , are working on getting a lighter (less MB) PDF into your hands as well as a Word Doc. Things rarely go as smoothly as planned, but its getting close.

I also know +Bill Webb got the printer's proof from the printer in China and he is very pleased with the results. The print copies coming number in the thousands.

Things have not been as smooth behind The Tavern's doors as I would have liked the past 2 weeks (allergies, ear infection, stomach issues, water pipe to the house leaking and needing replacement and a multitude of smaller issues) but with the community here at The Tavern, I truly start and finish each day with a smile on my face. Thank you.

If you haven't yet done so, think about joining the Tavern's Facebook Community. as I type this we are at 979 members. If we hit or surpass 1,000 members before the month is out I'm committed to doing at least 2 livestream chats a month for the community, answering questions and generally shooting the breeze. If Facebook enables the two person livestream chat before the year is out, I'll try to add a guest from the OSR at least once a month if not more - I already have a handful of volunteers.
