GM, Player or Both?

I've asked this question in the past, but with the influx of new readers, it's something that can easily be asked again:

Do you feel more comfortable as a GM, a player or can you easily embrace both roles?

I see myself primarily as a DM / GM, but I've been having a blast when the opportunity to play as a player comes my way. There was a time where I had difficulty feeling comfortable as a player, but I find these days I can embrace it and enjoy.

So, where do you fall?

  1. I mostly GM. Not always by choice.

  2. Player. Though I can do GM if inspired.

  3. I have way more time in as a Dm / GM, but I enjoy both.

  4. I GM for a year, then play for a year. I love the world creation aspect of being the GM. And enjoy screwing up the other GM's best laid plans by good role playing.

  5. I've literally always been a referee. To the best of my recollection, in 34 years of gaming I have never actually "played" an RPG even once.

    1. The first 20-odd years I played, that was my story. I've only really been a player starting in the last few years.
      I prefer being the DM.

  6. I mostly play these days, but I feel very comfortable in both roles. I love to play and GM.

  7. I get really anxious every time I DM, but I still do it when called upon. Way more comfortable as a player though.

  8. My experience has mostly been as a player. Pretty sure I only refereed once, and that was a complete failure. Most of my time spent thinking about D&D is as a potential referee, however

  9. Prefer to DM. Been playing a lot lately, though. It's different but not as enjoyable.

  10. I enjoy both, but I tend to be internally critical of poor DMs. As such, I usually DM.

  11. I prefer to GM, and do so a lot, but I like playing too.

  12. Both. Usually I'm a player, but I don't have any trouble sitting behind the screen terrorizing my players.

  13. The first three decades of playing, I was most comfortable as the DM and rarely enjoyed playing. Mostly because few DMs lived up to the expectations I had on what a DM should be doing, and probably because I had to give up some control and put myself in a vulnerable position. This decade I've been throwing caution to the wind by playing more and more, and it's been very fun.

  14. Used to be both, but I think I've GM'ed too much and become addicted to the brain overloading that GM'ing requires and I get a little bored just being a single PC.

  15. Both, but usually I DM. I'm in the very unusual position of being a player in 2 games (1 weekly, 1 monthly) with no ongoing DMing duties. That'll change in a week, but I've been enjoying it.

  16. I GM way more often than I get to be a player. I think my preferences skew slightly more towards GMing, but I really enjoy being a player.
