Why is Free RPG Day 2014 So "Eh" This Year?

About the only things I find interesting are the Goodman Games DCC Adventure and the LotFP Quickstart.

Cosmic Patrol I have picked up the last two years and have never come close to using and even the C&C adventure lacks excitement to my eyes.

Maybe the Valiant Universe RPG Quickstart could be a pick-up. I guess I should check out the free quickstart of the Valiant system on DrivethruRPG

There was a T&T Quickstart last year to get folks excited for Deluxe T&T, but that Kickstarter is going to be at least a year before it releases.

Yes, I'm bitching that free games aren't all to my liking. I know...

  1. Maybe because there are so many free resources already? An embarrassment of riches. :)

    1. Free and or inexpensive.

I'd rather pick up an OSR zine than 90% of the items above.

  2. I feel you, this crop isn't really getting me pumped up like last year. Better Than Any Man while not exactly my cup of gaming tea still blew me outta of the water. Hell I even went out and got a role playing tattoo after getting my goodies.

Well that was more for personal gratification and free rpg day just seemed so right.

  3. I'll still check it out, but I'm not all that excited this year either. Which is a shame. Not sure if its me or that I've been doing this for a while and I am seeing the same or similar items year after year. Like Scott said, an embarrassment of riches.

  4. If you don't like Cosmic Patrol then you probably won't like Valiant either, as they're exactly the same system. I like it myself, but it's definitely not for everybody.

  5. The Cosmic P is a ton of fun... It's an old school sort of gonzo space opera setting with a GMless rules light fly by the seat of your pants system. And that's my adjective fueled summation.

  6. I'm glad you posted this. I saw the offerings and it was extremely underwhelmed. A few repeat, and no clear I Gotta Have This! item. I'm not sure if I'll even bother to venture into town for it.

  7. I find myself interested in the same two products as you, Erik. Last year seemed more interesting overall. Be that as it may, I will be out to pick those two up, and I look forward to seeing the Goodman Game adventure in print. I might even run it at a store for Free RPG Day........

  8. I personally think there is some good stuff there.. granted I'm not stuck in the mindset that all new games are crap.. Pathfinder stuff looks good and I've been wanting to run a Shadowrun game for years so I might pick up the quick start guide as well...

  9. What more do you want? Boobs and card board tables?

  10. I don't know....there's some good stuff there from my perspective. Pathfinder, DCC, 13th Age (yay), Shadowrun, and Valiant all have me interested. Pity no one around here participates in Free RPG Day anymore....

  11. We contact all the publishers months in advance to participate, but definitely can't make them provide something as game companies pay for the freebies.

I can definitely tell folks that the reason you see Goodman, Catalyst, Paizo and Troll Lord each and every year is because those companies believe in the event and see it as a key marketing tool for their lines. There is definitely repetition from publishers, but the items are always new.

    Hope that helps.
