What is Your Favorite Non-D&D Old School RPG?

In my early days of roleplaying, I'd play just about anything. I did spend more time with two games than any other besides AD&D. Those games were MERP and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. So, if I were to ask the question based on what I played back in the day, those two would be my choices.

If you were to ask me today, based on what I find myself wanting to play, it would be Tunnels & Trolls - a game I refused to play back in the day.

Go figure ;)

So, which game or games would make your list?

  1. I loved the Pacesetter stuff back in the 80s (Timemaster, Space Ace, Chill). A close second would be Villains and Vigilantes.

  2. I have been hankering to play Traveller ever since Greywulf did his week long read through of it.

  3. TMNT and Other Strangenesses: great random tables for character creation.

  4. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Pendragon and Call of Cthulhu.

  5. Pendragon or Runequest for me.

  6. So many....all the ones that still make my list: T&T, Runequest (and I still own 2nd edition, which I'd still play as-is), Traveller, Palladium Fantasy 1st edition, Gamma World 1st edition, and Call of Cthulhu are all top dogs. Id' throw DC Heroes on the list, too; discovered that one in...1987, I think....but the Mayfair version of that game remains my favorite superhero system, hands down.

  7. I always liked Stormbringer, but Traveller and Cthulhu are always fun, too.

  8. WHFRP is a big one for me. I am also quite fond of Dream Park by Mike Pondsmith.

  9. Traveller is definitely my favorite "other Old-School game", by a long shot.

I played Boot Hill, Gamma World and Villains&Vigilantes "back in the day", but they never got much traction in my group.

  10. Dragonquest of course, but I also enjoyed 1st Edition Gamma World and Star Frontiers.

  11. The Fantasy Trip.

  12. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Still is my favorite.

  13. Absolutely Wfrp. The Imperial Campaign is the best campaign ever written for rpg! "A grim world of perilous adventure", amazing!

  14. Chill, Villains & Vigilantes and some Traveller.

  15. I played lots of Rifts and V:tM in the late 80s and 1990s when not playing D&D.

In the last decade I've discovered Boot Hill, Star Frontiers, and (best of all IMO) Flashing Blades.

These days, I run almost as much FB as I do D&D.

  16. Spacemaster, Gamma World 1st Edition (just enough rules to get you started, love adding new rules/equipment), James Bond (very innovative game), GURPS Autoduel/Car Wars (haven't played in years but we played a lot back in the day, one of my favorites). Although I don't play it anymore Stormbringer was a great RPG, just too dark for my taste now.

  17. It's a draw between Runequest II and Rolemaster with lots of Companion rules.

  18. Classic Traveller with the Judges Guild material thrown in.. haven't played in years though. Everyone here wants to kill dragons and loot dungeons.

  19. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1e

  20. Gamma World, Star Frontiers, car Wars

  21. Call of Cthulhu for me, though Runequest & Stormbringer would be close seconds. Never did get to play WHFRP but have recently picked up the core rules & Enemy Within campaign so that itch may soon get scratched.

  22. Back in the 1980s my favourite games to GM were Call of Cthulhu and Toon. As a player, it was Stormbringer or Paranoia. I was fortunate to have brilliant GMs for both those games.

  23. We played a lot of Call of Cthulhu, Starwars d6, and DC Heroes. I like Runequest a lot, but never did get to play it. I have some weird games on my bookshelf which I played once or twice: TMNT & Other Strangeness, Ghostbusters, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and Tales From the Floating Vagabond.

  24. I'm going to have to go with GURPS 2nd ed, narrowly beating out Chill and it's extended family (Thanks Goblinoid!)

  31. I loved MERP back in the day (mid-1980s). I probably ran more MERP than AD&D during high-school.

These days, though, I *still* play CoC. So that would be my favourite old school game today.

  32. 1) Traveller (Classic and Mega) - in fact, I love these more than any other game, by a huge margin
    2) Flashing Blades

    8) RuneQuest (Chaosium or AH editions)
    9) Chivalry & Sorcery
    10) James Bond 007

    2)Call of Cthulhu, 4th Edition
    3)Gamma World, 3rd Edition
    4)Top Secret(the 2nd Printing, I think...)
    5)Middle Earth Roleplaying(1st Edition, Revised)-The *only* one I owned bitd! :-)
    5)Star Frontiers
    6)Cyberspace
    7)Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes
    8)Stormbringer, 1st Edition
    9)Villains & Vigilantes, Revised
    10)Twilight:2000, 1st Edition

  34. Yowch.

Twilight 2000 comes in on the list, along with Top Secret (both the original editions, not the second editions - although the second printing of Top Secret 1st edition is better than the first).

Star Frontiers we still play, ditto for Gamma World.

Played a shit-tonne of Call of Cthulhu and TMNT, but they aren't on my faves list by far.

And honourable mention to Villains & Vigilantes (which I own four copies of).

  35. Marvel Advanced!

    FASERIP Forever.

  36. One of the few games I haven't played from the Old School collection is the first science-fiction roleplaying game, Metamorphosis Alpha (1976) by James Ward. I recently illustrated his contribution to the Petty Gods project, Ravel/Unravel: http://hitstokill.blogspot.co.nz/2013/07/james-ward-petty-gods-artwork.html
