First Impressions - Better Than Any Man - LotFP Free RPG Day 2013 Release

Say what you will about +James Raggi , but when he connects he hits it out of the park. Better Than Any Man is probably his best release yet.

The art, the maps, the presentation, the fold out cover, the screwed up real life history - 96 pages of James at his best and it's all for free. Alright, it was paid for by Kickstarter funding, but it was available for free on Free RPG Day.

I'm so looking forward to really digging into this. I just got my copy today from Noble Knight Games and have just done a quick skim of this. Didn't even open up the Star Wars Quickstart and the Swords & Wizardry one seems to have been aimed at newbies to the OSR (as well it should be).

Better Than Any Man is aimed solidly at those in the OSR and it really hass been excited to read it. Not so sure how representative it is to James's recent releases, as this seems at first glance to be very playable and not the recent party fucks that James has done of late - entertaining party fucks, but party fucks none the less. This seems like a sandbox setting with a very interesting plot. Hopefully it lives up to those impressions. I'll work on the review over the weekend.

  1. I am so proud to have backed the Kickstarter for this. This is an incredible achievement. Talk about forever raising the bar for a free product. I mean, I got a killer Harn map last year, but this...this is taking it to another level.

  2. Man bashing and bigotry are so prevalent that I didn't even give this a first look. If, on the outside chance, I missed a pearl of great price? I can live with that. Raggi needs to concentrate on producing good material and not on producing controversial product.

    1. I don't understand your remark. Raggi has been producing high quality material for several years now.

    2. 賈尼: There are some people who seem to believe that, because there is some shocking material in Jim Raggi's works, therefore the rest of it must be crap. That heuristic does work in a sadly large number of cases, but I personally think that it is a mistake to use it in relation to LotFP Games products.

  3. The party fuck is still there. But honestly, why do you think all of these adventures are for level one characters. It is a class ic case for erasing a dead characters name then inserting his identical twin brother into the next scene.

Gene, sorry your scruples made you pass, your loss.

  4. It's the only thing I wanted from this year's Free RPG Day, and then I didn't manage to make it out to any shops that were participating. Ah, well, I'm sure I can get a copy on eBay for like a gazillion dollars or something.

  5. If you think this product is about man-bashing, you've been grossly misinformed.

The "better than any man" title does not refer to the alien on the front cover, nor to any womanly preferences.

Get a copy and find out for yourself.

    1. Gene is from YDIS. When they tire of slinging shit back and forth they come to The Tavern for a drink ;)

    2. To be fair Gene is an outcast on YDIS as well.

    3. Gene must have a really hard time keeping friends at this rate.

  6. This is very cheap on eBay right now, fucking scalpers. No doubt due to Raggi running of 9000 plus copies, so grab it fast.
